22nd Nov, 2010

It seems strange that it's nearly December already; the year has gone by so fast. There has to be something I can write about other than the ball. I guess it's a good thing us sixth years don't have NEWTs to look forward to!

Help. I need a dress for the ball. Or rather, a color for the dress, I don't even know. I feel so ridiculous asking, but any advice?

[Private to Thierry]
France or London for the holidays this year?

First off, I had a wonderful birthday thanks to my brilliant friends et mon frère préféré. I know I told you all when I saw you but thank you all so much again.

I managed to forget that we're supposed to wear costumes to the Halloween feast, so I haven't gotten mine; gives me something to do in Hogsmeade. I'll probably continue my trend of choosing a lesser-known literary character, which never works very well. I usually end up in a generic historical costume, explaining who I am for the entire night because there's no real identifying characteristics. I still have fun with it, though, so I don't care and it leads to some interesting conversations.

To the person who set off fireworks at dinner last night:

You owe me a new copy of "Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphs and the Afterlife." Your fireworks while admittedly amusing, startled me so much that I dropped it amidst the chaos and now I can't find it anywhere.

I don't suppose there's a chance anyone has found it?

I just spent two hours translating a story written in Middle Egyptian hieroglyphs and it is possibly one of the strangest funniest more memorable translations I've ever done. I followed it satisfactorily when it was just a story about a shipwrecked sailor, but when the sailor landed on a desert island and started talking to a giant serpent whose family had died a fiery death by meteorite I decided that Egyptian hieroglyphs are my new fascination of the month. Consider yourselves lucky if you see me outside the languages section of the library for anything other than classes and maybe meals for the next two weeks.
